121 Support

Children may have diagnosed and undiagnosed difficulties that could be impacting on their progress at school and their social, emotional development. These difficulties may be leading a child into displaying challenging behaviours which can be difficult to manage and upsetting for the child and those supporting them.

There has been an increase in the number of children who have barriers from attending school, have disengaged with their learning or find it hard to regulate their behaviour. On occasions, this can result in fixed term or permanent exclusions (PEX) that fuel the negative feelings that some children already have about themselves.

How we work

At Nurture Space we feel it is vital to plan suitable and appropriate support for each individual child. To do this, we place a heavy emphasis on finding out as much as we can about a child's strengths and difficulties before we start working with them.

We work with commissioning organisations to review any assessments that a child may have already had and to explore any EHCP plans. provision plans, IEP's (Individual Education Plans), APDR's (Assess, Plan, Do, Review plans).  As an organisation, we also make use of Boxall® profiles and SDQ (Goldmans Strengths and Development questionnaires) to help target specific areas of social and emotional support.

Informed by this work, Nurture Space staff will them propose a plan of how best we can support an individual child. This may be through working with them 121 at their current school or at a venue external to the school.

Nurture Space staff have a range of skills, knowledge and experience to enable them to engage with children in a variety of ways to help them to overcome the barriers that they have with their learning. Our staff are qualified teachers or level 3 / 4 qualified teaching assistants that specialise in using a trauma informed approach to working with children.

Our staff are supportive and take the time to get to know each child as an individual. Using carefully thought through activities, children learn to communicate about their feelings and emotions, build confidence and learn coping strategies to enable them to start to access learning again.

Reintegration of children back into school is key to what we aim to do. Often this involves working with staff at a school to help with a child's individual transition plan. We offer coaching and mentoring to school staff to help them support the child back into their setting.

Our aim is to always try and integrate children back into mainstream school. Where this is not possible, Nurture Space staff are committed to working with the commissioning organisation, family and child, to find a suitable longer term learning placement that meets the child's needs.
